ZEISS Group is set to establish a new strategic business unit, ZEISS Photonics & Optics, starting October 1, 2024. This move consolidates several specialized units within the ZEISS Group, aiming to enhance the global reach of its photonics and optics technologies. The new unit will operate independently, fostering an environment conducive to growth.
The ZEISS Photonics & Optics unit will encompass existing businesses outside the traditional ZEISS segments that have significant growth potential. These include various consumer and professional market units from the Consumer Products division, such as Cinematography, Mobile Imaging, Photo, and optics for hunting and nature observation. Additionally, Microoptics, Spectroscopy, Planetariums, and Simulation Projection Solutions from the Shared Production Unit will also be integrated into the new strategic unit.
With an estimated annual revenue of approximately €200 million and a workforce of nearly 900 employees, ZEISS Photonics & Optics will have a strong international presence, with operations in Germany, Hungary, the UK, the US, India, and China.
The formation of ZEISS Photonics & Optics aligns with ZEISS's strategy to focus on market-specific customer needs while strengthening the ZEISS brand. Notably, ZEISS technologies impact millions globally, with over 20 million visitors to ZEISS planetariums annually and more than 15 million users of ZEISS optics in mobile photography. ZEISS lenses are also prominent in film production, captivating audiences worldwide. Innovations like multifunctional glass from Jena, showcased at CES 2024, have significant applications in automotive and smart home industries.
“The establishment of ZEISS Photonics & Optics provides the appropriate environment for these smaller, specialized units, offering tailored management, culture, and business support functions,” said Stefan Müller, CFO of the ZEISS Group and the executive board member responsible for the new unit. “Our goal is to enable these individual businesses to thrive economically while further developing the ZEISS brand.”
Leadership for ZEISS Photonics & Optics will be under André Kutz, Head of Strategic Corporate Development at ZEISS Group, and Dr. Bernhard Ohnesorge, member of the Management Board of the Shared Production Unit. Both leaders bring extensive international experience in strategic development and technological innovation to their new roles.
According to the company, the restructuring will not affect ZEISS customers regarding products, services, or contacts, ensuring a seamless transition and continued excellence in customer service.
