ACO Launches 2025 Certificate Courses for Optometrists

ACO coursesThe Australian College of Optometry (ACO) has officially opened registrations for its suite of 2025 certificate courses, designed to support practising optometrists with cutting-edge education and practical experience.

These programs, developed in collaboration with industry leaders, aim to address the evolving needs of optometry professionals. Each course offers evidence-based knowledge paired with actionable insights, empowering practitioners to elevate patient care standards.

Courses offered in 2025 include:

  • Advanced Certificate in Children’s Vision – starts February 10, 2025
  • Advanced Certificate in Glaucoma – starts March 17, 2025
  • Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics – starts April 14, 2025
  • Certificate in Advanced Contact Lenses – starts April 28, 2025
  • Certificate in Public Health and Leadership in Eye Care – starts June 2, 2025

The courses blend remote learning components—such as pre-recorded lectures, live webinars, and peer discussions—with a strong emphasis on clinical placements. This structure caters to optometrists balancing demanding professional schedules with ongoing education.

We are proud to offer programs that not only expand clinical expertise but also empower optometrists to provide more comprehensive and impactful care to their patients,” stated Shazia Tahseen, ACO Education Manager.

A defining feature of the ACO’s programs is the inclusion of hands-on clinical placements. These opportunities bridge the gap between theory and practice, equipping participants with real-world skills.

We’ve found that as more optometrists are looking to upskill, they are paying particular attention to the level of their practical skills. The opportunity to gain that hands-on experience as part of an ACO certificate is simply irreplaceable,” explained Tahseen. “Many candidates complete their placements with their local ophthalmologist, which provides a unique learning opportunity and chance to make deeper a connection than their existing referring relationship.

Graduates have shared how placements enriched their practice. Anthony Wong, who completed the Advanced Certificate in Glaucoma, highlighted how working alongside ophthalmologists gave him a deeper understanding of patient management. At the same time, another graduate, Celine Fung, praised the transformative impact of addressing knowledge gaps in her practice.

With courses set to begin in early 2025, registrations are now open. Interested optometrists can find more information and enroll through the ACO website.
