New Consumer Advisory Group Launched to Shape Australian Eye Research

New Consumer Advisory Group Launched to Shape Australian Eye ResearchA new Consumer Advisory Group has been established to influence the future of research at the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) and its clinical trials subsidiary, Cerulea Clinical Trials. This initiative aims to integrate the perspectives of consumers—individuals living with eye conditions and their families—into the core of medical research and strategic planning.

Simon Brewin, Chair of the group and CERA Board Director, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating that consumer insights will directly inform research priorities and the development of new treatments for eye diseases. “This is a turning point for CERA. Involving consumers directly in our research isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s going to make our work more impactful,” he remarked. Brewin highlighted that these voices are crucial in guiding research efforts.

The advisory group consists of independent consumers including Jane Cherry, Dr. Colleen Lewis, Dr. Ronelle Hutchinson, and Daniel Talko, alongside advocates from organizations like Vision Australia and representatives from CERA and Cerulea Clinical Trials. Kelly Schulz, CERA’s Consumer Involvement and Advocacy Lead, noted that the group's strength lies in its diverse perspectives and experiences. She stated, “This advisory group marks the starting point for CERA’s broader Consumer Program, laying the foundation for meaningful, long-term involvement of consumers in our research and strategy.”

The group will advise on various aspects of CERA and Cerulea’s operations, from early research design to disseminating results. This collaboration ensures that CERA's research is practical and responsive to community needs.

CERA Managing Director Professor Keith Martin underscored the importance of consumer involvement in research, asserting that their insights will enhance the real-world impact of their work. “The launch of the Consumer Advisory Group marks an important step forward for CERA as it continues to advance eye research,” he stated. By embedding consumer perspectives into its framework, CERA is reinforcing its commitment to inclusive, community-driven research alongside other organisations with similar goals.
