Alcon Unity Systems included on ARTG

AlconAlcon has announced the inclusion of its Unity Vitreoretinal Cataract System (VCS) and Unity Cataract System (CS) on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) and notified to the Web Assisted Notification of Devices (WAND)  database in New Zealand.

The Unity VCS and CS are designed to deliver significant workflow improvements compared to Alcon’s existing flagship systems, including the Constellation Vision System for vitreoretinal and combined procedures and the Centurion Vision System with Active Sentry for cataract surgery.

  • Unity VCS: Described as Alcon’s “most advanced” integrated platform, this system combines vitreoretinal and cataract surgical capabilities. It maximizes operating room space while incorporating an optional laser for procedures like photocoagulation and trabeculoplasty.
  • Unity CS: A standalone cataract system tailored for phacoemulsification and cataract removal.

Both systems leverage a novel phacoemulsification modality that reduces energy use by 40% while achieving up to two times faster nucleus removal. For vitreoretinal surgeons, Unity VCS boasts cutting speeds of up to 30,000 cuts per minute, supported by a proprietary fluidics system that enhances surgical stability and efficiency.

In preparation for their 2025 launch, the Unity VCS and CS have undergone rigorous testing during investigational advisory wet lab sessions involving more than 200 experienced surgeons from 30 countries, including Australia. These sessions have provided valuable insights to refine the systems further and ensure their readiness for real-world applications.

At Alcon, we have a long legacy of involving our customers throughout the research and development process,” said Mr. Franck Leveiller, Alcon’s head of global R&D and chief scientific officer. “Unity VCS and CS represent a bold step forward in advancing surgical innovation and patient outcomes.”

The introduction of these technologies comes at a critical time as global demand for eye surgeries continues to rise. By 2024, an estimated 31 million cataract surgeries will be performed worldwide, increasing to 37 million by 2029. Additionally, approximately 2.2 million vitrectomy procedures are projected globally in 2024.

Unity VCS and CS exemplify Alcon’s commitment to pioneering advancements in surgical equipment,” said Ms. Penny Stewart, Cluster Franchise Head Surgical and Country Manager for Alcon ANZ. “From cutting speeds to fluidics management, to ergonomics and workflow, these systems are designed to enhance efficiencies and deliver exceptional patient outcomes.”

Unity VCS and CS mark the beginning of Alcon’s Unity portfolio, which aims to expand with additional innovative solutions in the coming years. As part of the Alcon Vision Suite, these systems will be supported by comprehensive training, product maintenance, and service teams to ensure seamless adoption by eyecare professionals.

With their introduction planned for 2025, these cutting-edge technologies signal a new era in ophthalmic surgery, empowering surgeons to meet increasing procedural demands with confidence and precision.
