Most Influential Women in Optical Goes Global with European Launch
A longstanding US industry initiative recognising female excellence in optics is crossing the Atlantic for the first time, with nominations now open for the inaugural European edition.
20/20 Europe and Jobson Optical Group have announced the launch of the "Most Influential Women in Optical" (MIWO) European Edition, bringing a program that has celebrated women in the optical industry across the United States since 2003 to an international audience for the first time.
The initiative, which has long been a fixture of Vision Monday, one of the US optical industry's leading trade publications, will now be driven by 20/20 Europe, published by Matilde Sometti out of Italy. The European rollout reflects growing momentum around recognising female leadership across the global eyewear sector.
Nominations Open Now
The nomination process launched on 25 March 2026 via an electronic survey, with a deadline of 24 April 2026. Industry professionals are encouraged to put forward colleagues who are making a meaningful contribution across any corner of the optical sector: from clinical practice and retail to marketing, education and executive leadership.
The European edition will honour women across five categories:
- Business Leaders — senior executives guiding companies and setting the tone for the wider industry
- Mentors — those building talent and inspiring professional growth in others
- Rising Stars — emerging professionals on the path to greater influence and responsibility
- Founders — women who have launched and grown their own optical businesses or creative projects, including co-founders
- Innovators — those driving new product development, technology, retail, sustainability, or patient service initiatives
Finalists Celebrated at SILMO Paris
The shortlisted women will be featured in the May/June issue of 20/20 Europe and on its website, with the formal announcement and a special luncheon honouring the finalists scheduled for 25 September at SILMO Paris 2026.
For Australian eyecare professionals with European connections, whether working with international suppliers, studying abroad, or collaborating across borders, the initiative is a timely reminder that conversations about gender equity and female leadership in optics are gaining traction well beyond our shores.
