WCO and Alcon Launch Video Series to Help ECPs Navigate TFOS DEWS III Recommendations

WCO and Alcon Launch Video Series to Help ECPs Navigate TFOS DEWS III RecommendationsA new three-part educational series breaks down the landmark dry eye report for busy clinicians, as the global burden of dry eye disease continues to climb.

The World Council of Optometry (WCO) and Alcon have joined forces to release a concise video series aimed at helping eye care professionals (ECPs) put the recently published TFOS DEWS III report into everyday clinical practice.

The series, freely available to practitioners, features three segments covering the report's overall findings, its diagnostic methodology, and key elements of its management and therapy guidance. Presenting the content are Professors Jennifer Craig, Lyndon Jones, and James Wolffsohn, all of whom served on the TFOS DEWS III Steering Committee and have been central to the broader WCO-Alcon dry eye education initiative.

The timing is significant. Dry eye disease now affects an estimated 1.6 billion people globally, with prevalence continuing to rise in line with increased screen time, environmental factors, and an ageing population. For Australian optometrists managing a growing caseload of dry eye patients, staying current with best-practice guidelines is increasingly critical and increasingly time-consuming.

WCO president Cindy Tromans acknowledged the challenge directly. "We recognise that the pace of life may get in the way of reading TFOS DEWS III in its entirety," she said. "This compact video series creates an important resource for clinicians and educators looking to continuously improve their practice using the most recent evidence."

Dr Carla Mack, Global Head of Professional Education and Development at Alcon, said the series was designed to close the gap between research and the consulting room. "Through this TFOS DEWS III summary video series, we aim to translate the latest science and expert perspectives into accessible education material, helping empower ECPs to better understand, identify, measure and manage this condition in their practices."

The video launch follows the recent release of the Dry Eye Management Map, an interactive online decision-support tool developed through the same partnership. The tool draws on TFOS DEWS III guidance to generate evidence-based management options, while keeping clinical judgement firmly with the practitioner.

ECPs can also access the WCO Alcon Dry Eye Wheel, a three-step framework built around mitigation, measurement, and management.
