Inspecs Partners with Qualcomm Technologies in US$10m Smart Eyewear Play
British eyewear group takes a bold step into wearable AI as chipmaker backs next-generation connected frames
Inspecs Group plc has announced a strategic collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., alongside a US$10 million (approximately A$14.1 million) equity investment that sees the US semiconductor giant take an approximately 6.8% stake in the London AIM-listed eyewear company. The deal, revealed on 16 June 2026, signals a significant pivot for the Bristol-headquartered group as it positions itself at the intersection of traditional eyewear and emerging wearable technology.
Under the agreement, Qualcomm Technologies will subscribe for 7,503,001 new ordinary shares at £1 per share, raising gross proceeds of approximately £7.5 million (around A$14.1 million) for Inspecs. The funds will support general working capital and accelerate growth as the company moves deeper into the technology category.
The Qualcomm investment arrives against the backdrop of an already notable shareholder register. Italian eyewear company Safilo Group had held a roughly 30% stake in Inspecs, making Qualcomm's entry a further signal that the company is attracting serious strategic interest from across the broader eyewear and technology industries.
From frames to platforms
The collaboration is aimed squarely at developing next-generation smart eyewear across both consumer and enterprise markets, combining Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipset platform with Inspecs's design capability, manufacturing infrastructure, and global licensing portfolio.
Inspecs founder Robin Totterman described the partnership as the culmination of a long-held conviction. "For many years we have believed that smart eyewear is the next frontier for wearable technology," he said. "We believe this investment and strategic collaboration will accelerate adoption in a category that is about to scale rapidly , and position Inspecs and Qualcomm Technologies among leaders in the industry."
Snapdragon START programme
Of particular note for the optical industry is that Inspecs will be the first partner to adopt Qualcomm's Snapdragon START programme, a platform designed to help manufacturers bring smart glasses to market more efficiently.
Ziad Asghar, Senior Vice President and General Manager of XR, Wearables and Personal AI at Qualcomm Technologies, said the collaboration reflects the company's focus on enabling a new generation of personal AI devices. "We're also pleased that Inspecs will be the first partner to adopt our Snapdragon START program, helping bring smart glasses to market that fit naturally into everyday life-blending timeless design with powerful, intuitive technology."
Implications for the optical channel
For eyecare professionals, the announcement is another indicator of the accelerating convergence between the optical and consumer electronics industries. Inspecs already distributes to more than 75,000 points of sale across 80-plus countries, and its existing relationships with optical retailers and independent opticians could become a key route to market for whatever connected eyewear products emerge from this collaboration.
The enterprise segment, which Asghar specifically flagged as a target alongside healthcare and industrial applications, may also be of interest to practitioners exploring clinical or low-vision applications of wearable technology.
