UNSW Crowned World No. 1 for Optometry Research

UNSW Crowned World No. 1 for Optometry ResearchThe UNSW School of Optometry & Vision Science has been ranked the best optometry school in the world for research excellence, topping the latest Global Optometrist Top 200 Research Ranking (T200).

The T200 ranking, published by OptomRankings.com, measures the research impact of optometrists globally using the h-index, a standard metric for research productivity and influence. Institutions are ranked according to how many of their affiliated researchers appear within the global top 200.

UNSW claimed top spot with 17 of its optometrist researchers featuring in the T200, more than any other institution among an estimated 250 optometry schools worldwide. UNSW's Professor Konrad Pesudovs was ranked the number one individual researcher globally.

The ranking takes into account both current and historical contributions, crediting the collective body of work produced by researchers associated with the School throughout its history.

Head of School Professor Lisa Keay said the result reflected decades of investment in the School's research capability.

"This achievement is a testament to the dedication, expertise and collaborative spirit of our research community," Professor Keay said. "It highlights the global impact of the work being undertaken at UNSW to advance eye and vision care and improve health outcomes."

UNSW pointed to its strategic investment in research infrastructure, recruitment of leading academics, and culture of collaboration as key drivers behind the ranking. The School's performance has also been bolstered by its ties to several influential research bodies, including the Cornea and Contact Lens Research Unit (CCLRU), the Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research and Technology (CRCERT), and the Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI), all of which have contributed to building research capacity and developing emerging leaders in the field.

The No. 1 ranking adds to UNSW's long track record in optometry and vision science, and cements its standing as one of the world's foremost centres for eye health research.
